# Market Selection and Languages

Choosing a market is not choosing a country name. Each market has its own search behaviour, language expectation and operational requirement. The right choice is the market you can genuinely answer today.

An institution with pages in eight languages and answers in three loses patients in five. The first decision in multilingual work is not which language to add but which one not to add.

## A three-axis assessment

Three questions must be answered before entering a market: is there real demand, how saturated is the competition, and can the institution reply in that language? If any answer is negative, that market does not enter phase one.

Readiness is where the assessment usually stops short. Teams model demand and map rivals, then never settle who picks up the phone in that language on a Friday evening. Enquiries arrive and sit unanswered while the spend continues.

## Localisation, not translation

Translation carries a Turkish sentence into the target language. Localisation starts from the question the patient in that market asks and, where necessary, adds a section the Turkish page never had. In Germany insurance and invoicing questions are decisive; in the Gulf companion and accommodation arrangements come first.

The gap shows up in the numbers: straight translations tend to be skimmed and abandoned in the destination market, while rewritten pages convert a smaller audience at a noticeably higher rate.

## What institutions ask about this topic

### How many markets should we start with?

One primary market and one test market in phase one. Entering three or more simultaneously pushes language support and follow-up rhythm past what the institution can carry.

### Which languages are mandatory?

Language requirements depend on the target market. English is usually the base; in Germany and France local-language communication is close to a condition of entry, while in the Netherlands and Scandinavia English is generally sufficient.

### Can we use machine translation?

We advise against raw machine output. In health communication a wrong phrase creates both trust and compliance exposure; it can serve as a draft but must be edited by someone with subject knowledge.

### Should every page be translated?

There is no need. Start with who you are, what the treatment involves and how to reach you; material written for the domestic audience often has no counterpart abroad.

### Does adding languages hurt SEO?

Done properly, no. The damage traces back to mis-declared language tags, repeated text and versions left unfinished.

### How often should market data be refreshed?

A full refresh annually and a short quarterly update. When regulation changes we review without waiting for the calendar.
